Owls hauled back by ‘old boy’ Varney after JJ opener

Two second-half goals inside six minutes from ex-Owls loanee Luke Varney sent Wednesday to defeat at Elland Road in the lunchtime kick off.

Jermaine Johnson had put us ahead on 27 minutes, breaking clear to knock the ball past Paddy Kenny and underline Wednesday’s first-half superiority.

However, Leeds came out fired up after the break under new boss Brian McDermott and within minutes of the restart our dangerman JJ was subbed, presumably through injury.

Then, just as Wednesday looked to have weathered the home side’s pressure, Varney levelled on 63 minutes and to make matters worse grabbed the winner six minutes later.

The Owls rallied, with Steve Howard hitting the woodwork and Leroy Lita missing a great chance, but it was to no avail as Leeds leapfrogged over us again in the Championship.
