Van Aken ready for Wednesday debut?

Wednesday fans could get their first look at young defender Joost van Aken in Saturday’s televised clash with Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough.

The 23-year-old joined from Heerenveen last month in a reported £4m deal and is the most likely replacement for Glenn Loovens, who is still struggling with the hip injury which he suffered against QPR last month and then aggravated in training.

Frederico Vernancio, who signed for the Owls on a year-long loan in August and is awaiting his debut as well, is another possibility to take on Loovens’ central defender slot.

Jacob Butterfield will also be looking to make an impact in midfield after joining from Derby in a season-long loan swap with Sam Winnall.

On the injury front, Barry Bannan returned from the Scotland squad at the weekend after aggravating a foot injury but Carlos Carvalhal is hopeful he will be fit to face Forest, while Adam Reach and Steven Fletcher are expected to be ready to play following slight knocks.
