Under-23s miss out on league title double

Wednesday-s under-23s failed to retain their PDL2 North title after a 2-1 defeat to Burnley at Hillsborough on Friday afternoon.

The youngsters, needing only a draw in this final game of the season to be crowned champions again, went a goal up inside three minutes through Preslav Borukov.

The same player almost made it two when his shot came back off the bar on 15 minutes but Burnley went straight up the other end to equalise.

Worse followed ten minutes from the break when the visitors took the lead.

Wednesday battled for that all-important equaliser after the interval, Ben Hughes having a header cleared off the line and Jordan Lonchar seeing his injury time shot hit the crossbar.

Owls keeper Dan Wallis saved a penalty but, with other results going against Wednesday and that equaliser failing to materialise, the youngsters also slipped to third place and out of the play-off positions.
