Trio of promotion rivals chalk up wins

Tonight’s division one results did Wednesday few favours with three of four promotion rivals in action recording victories.

While we are not playing in midweek, the trio of Wigan, MK Dons and Wycombe all won, with Oxford the only losers of the quartet on the night.

We remain in fifth place on 72 points from 40 games but our outside chance of automatic promotion became even slimmer with Wigan’s 3-0 success over Accrington taking them to the top on 83 points from 39 matches while MK Dons’ 2-1 victory against Crewe lifts them into second place (82 points from 41).

Previous leaders Rotherham (80 points from 39) were not in action tonight and drop to third place while Plymouth, also not playing this evening, remain in fourth (77 points from 41).

Wycombe, 4-1 winners at Cambridge, move into sixth place and level with Wednesday on 72 points but having played one more game than us.

Sunderland, also not in action, drop to seventh (70 points from 40 played) while Oxford went down 2-1 at Morecambe and slip to eighth (69 points from 41).
