Three points from play-offs after away win

Goals in each half from Steven Fletcher and Rolando Aarons at Bolton on Tuesday evening stretched our unbeaten run to 10 games and lifted Wednesday to within three points of the play-off positions.

Fletcher put us ahead just before the end of a largely uninspiring first half, coolly clipping the ball past home keeper Remi Matthews in style after a fine move involving Atdhe Nuhiu and Barry Bannan.

The quality of goal was out of keeping with the rest of the opening 45 minutes with Wednesday, as at Derby on Saturday, often looking uncertain and, to some degree, fortunate that a struggling Bolton side were unable to capitalise on our lack of drive and energy.

However, again as with the Derby game, we came out for the second half on the front foot and doubled the lead with another excellent goal just before the hour-mark, Aarons feeding off Adam Reach’s through ball and firing home his first for the club with a fierce effort high into the net.

Sam Winnall almost made it three, Matthews keeping out his low drive at the end of another flowing Wednesday move as we began to dominate proceedings.

Bolton caused one or two scares at the other end and Keiren Westwood denied Clayton Donaldson with a fine save in the closing stages to ensure our victory … and another clean sheet.

The win sees Wednesday sitting in ninth place, with just three points separating us from sixth-placed Bristol City, who have a game in hand.

Wednesday evening’s games will see the placings change to some degree but we will go into Saturday’s home game with Blackburn still eyeing that outside chance of a play-off slot.
