Steven’s stunner enough to earn the points

A quality long-range strike from man-of-the-match Steven Fletcher gave Wednesday a well-deserved win over Wigan at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Fletcher, who worked tirelessly up front, got the goal his performance deserved just after the hour-mark when he expertly curled a low 20-yarder into the corner of the net.

Following an instantly forgettable first-half with few clearcut chances for either side, Fletcher’s goal lifted the mood on a freezing January day at S6 and we might easily have scored more goals in the final 25 minutes.

Fletcher saw a second effort blocked, George Boyd twice went close to adding to the lead and then sub Atdhe Nuhiu was foiled by Wigan keeper Jamie Jones.

It was hardly a memorable Wednesday performance but we dominated the game, the statistics showing we had 21 shots with eight on target while Wigan mustered just one effort on target in the 90 minutes.

The victory sees us stay in 16th on 35 points but also now 12 clear of the relegation places.

Westwood, Palmer, Lees, Hector, Fox, Boyd, Bannan, Hutchinson, Reach, Matias (Joao 61), Fletcher (Nuhiu 81). Att: 22,323.
