Spot of bother as Owls lose out in derby

Wednesday suffered a second successive defeat and a further setback to our play-off hopes when we lost the Yorkshire derby 1-0 at Leeds.

A defensive error for their goal and a missed penalty from Jordan Rhodes proved the decisive moments in a game where we had enough of the play, particularly in the second half, but lacked a cutting edge up front.

Leeds posed few problems themselves in the second half but we also rarely troubled Rob Green in the home goal.

The winner came after 24 minutes when Vincent Sasso appeared to duck under a cross from the left and Chris Wood turned it past Keiren Westwood from six yards.

Our best chance to equalise came from the penalty spot after 53 minutes when Sam Hutchinson was fouled in the box by Souleymane Doukara. The resulting spot kick from Jordan Rhodes was in the corner but lacked power and Green was able to dive at full stretch to push it on to the post.

We remain in sixth place and five points clear of Fulham in seventh. The Londoners drew 2-2 at Cardiff this afternoon and also have a game in hand on us.

Victory for Leeds takes them three points clear of us and into fourth place, Reading dropping to fifth and staying two points ahead of Wednesday after their 3-0 defeat at Brighton in the early evening game.
