Sky Sports apologises after award blunder

Fernando Forestieri’s outstanding season saw him scoop two more awards yesterday … only for one of them to be ‘taken away’ after a blunder by Sky Sports.

Forestieri, who was recently named London Owls Player of the Year, won the swfc.co.uk award after receiving 52 per cent of the votes via the club’s official website, with Barry Bannan in second place and Kieran Lee in third.
Last night. he was announced as the Sky Bet Championship Fans’ Player of the Year on the Sky Sports website, only for the website to announce today that Forestieri had, in fact, finished runner-up to Middlesbrough’s Daniel Ayala.
The website said today the players had each polled 40 per cent of the votes and that it had incorrectly stated that Forestieri was the winner. The votes have now been verified by an independent party and Ayala polled 38,002 votes, with Forestieri collecting 37,825 votes.
Sky Sports website added: “We are keen to put the record straight and sincerely apologise to Fernando, Sheffield Wednesday and to all the fans who voted for this mistaken report.”
