Second-half strikes end hopes of cup run

Two second-half goals sent Wednesday out of the Carabao Cup in our tie with Wolves at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening.

Jos Luhukay fielded a totally different starting 11 to the one that began against Ipswich on Saturday while Wolves made nine changes from the side that faced Manchester City at the weekend.

After a first half of few clear-cut chances, the visitors went ahead on 53 minutes when the dangerous Adama Traore outpaced Morgan Fox down our left-hand side and his cross landed at the feet of Leo Bonatini – via a fortunate deflection – for the Wolves man to fire home.

Wolves almost made it two soon afterwards when Morgan Gibbs-White struck a post while Steven Fletcher saw an overhead kick pushed away by John Ruddy as Wednesday strove to level matters and Fernando Forestieri was also foiled by the keeper.

However, the visitors ensured their place in the third round with six minutes left, Fox bringing down Helder Costa and the Wolves man picking himself up to drive home the resulting spot kick.

Wildsmith, Baker, Nielsen, Hutchinson, J.Lee, Fox, Jones (Kirby 85) Preston (Nuhiu 73), Boyd, Forestieri, Fletcher (Stobbs 73). Attendance: 13,597.
