Paul is our quiz king!

Congratulations to London Owl Paul Harrop for successfully defending his Individual Quiz crown (albeit shared this year with a guy from Barnet).

London Owls Night

Thursday 01 November 2007 - Halloween +1 saw the London Owls Quiz Night 4 taking place at The Calthorpe Arms, Gray's Inn Road. 17 souls took part forming teams such as "Mark needs a wee", "The Ringers", Sharko...", "Phoenix Club", "Always the Bridesmaid" and "Roland Nilsson's...". Six fun-packed rounds and a picture round saw the top three teams separated by four points at the end of the night.

Round 1 opened up to a blast of Vangelis. It was just like being at Hillsborough at five to three! Sport featured questions including, "Which boxer will face Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas in December?", and "Name the English semi-final try scorer who missed the Rugby World Cup Final through injury.".

A bit of everything was round 2.

Could you name the character that fell off scaffolding the other week in Coronation Street, thanks to the handiwork of the evil David Platt?

Round 3, and we got the technology out with musical intros. and TV themes. Remember the Fall Guy theme tune, and could you identify Johnny Cash singing Personal Jesus? At the end of round 3, time for the, as always, excellent buffet. The scores revealed the double winning championship team “Mark needs a wee” to be leading by 3 points from “Roland Nilsson’s…” and 5 points ahead of “Always the Bridesmaids” – runners up at the last 2 events.

Round 4 Entertainment: Could you name the former James Bond who appeared in arguably the best movie of 2007? Of course I mean Hot Fuzz? Maybe you remembered who was buried under the patio of 10 Brookside Close? Soon onto Round 5, everyone’s favourite that was “It’s your round”. Here we had shed loads of questions from which 12 were chosen by the participants. Out of the hat were pulled, amongst others, “What sad fate did Tommy Cooper, Sid James and Leonard Rossiter have in common?” and “Which celebrity duo had their first break into stardom in Byker Grove?

At the end of Round 5 “Mark needs a wee” had a 7-point lead over both “Roland Nilsson’s…” and “Always the Bridesmaids”. Totting up the picture round saw the leaders 8 points in front. Drama was to come as the “Bridesmaids” and “Roly” stormed the Sheffield Wednesday round, taking 14 points each but “Mark needs a wee” unfortunately bagged only 5 points. This had the quizmasters checking and re-checking but this time the “Bridesmaids” took the title by 1 point from “Mark needs a wee”. “Roland Nilsson’s…” finished a noteworthy 3rd - 4 points behind the champs. “The Ringers” literally took home wooden spoons but as non-Wednesdayite guests they had a good stab at the final round - cheers for helping us out lads! Questions in the Wednesday round included "Who scored Wednesday’s first league goal of the 2007/8 season?" and "Against which club - and on which ground – did Paolo Di Canio score his first goal for Wednesday?"

A cracking night out with excellent raffle prizes won, including the chance to present a match shirt to Frankie Simek (London Owls shirt sponsorship) at Hillsborough, snapped up by Ken. All in al,l we had a great, smashing, super night and in total we raised £116 for the SWFC Academy Fund. Cheers for the support.

A big thank you to all that took part and also to everyone involved in making this event happen – cheers to co-quizmasters Ian and Phil. It was good to see newcomers to the Quiz Night ... hope you enjoyed it. Keep a look out for Quiz Night 5. Some cracking questions are already lined up!!!

Cheers,

Jonathan
