Portuguese coach linked with manager role

The unlikely name of Carlos Carvalhal is being heavily linked with the vacant manager’s job at Wednesday.

The 49-year-old from Portugal, who has managed several clubs since ending his career as a centre half in 1998, is largely unknown outside of his home country but there are increasing reports connecting him with the job after Stuart Gray’s sacking on Thursday evening.

Carvalhal’s managerial career to date reads: Esphinho (July 1998-June 2000), Desportivo Aves (July 00-June 01), Leixoes (July 01-June 03), Setubal (July 03-May 04), Belenenses (May 04-October 05), Braga (May 06-November 06), Beira-Mar (November 06-January 07), Setubal (May 07-May 08), Asteras Tripolis (May 08-Oct 08), Maritimo (February 09-September 09), Sporting Lisbon (November 09-May 2010), Besiktas (August 2011-April 2012) and Basaksehir (May 12-November 12).
