Play-offs in our hands says Carlos

Carlos Carvalhal paid tribute to his Wednesday side’s performance after we outplayed title-chasing Newcastle and further boosted our play-off hopes at the same time.

Speaking after the convincing 2-1 victory, Carvalhal said: “We were near our best and very, very good against the best side in the competition.

“We ran and fought for every ball and made it very difficult for Newcastle to play their football. “

The win also keeps us in that final play-off position –  two points clear of nearest rivals Fulham – and Carvalhal added: “All I care about is Sheffield Wednesday because if we win our games we will finish in the play-offs, this is the fact.

“We can only care about ourselves right now because everything is in our hands.”

Above us, defeats for third-placed Huddersfield and Reading in fourth mean we now trail them by five points and four points respectively, the Terriers also having a game in hand.

Fifth-placed Leeds remain three points ahead of us after beating Preston, the result leaving the Lilywhites eight points behind us with only five games left.

Of the others below us, we have a seven-point lead over fast-improving Derby and are nine points clear of tenth-placed Norwich.
