Play-off rivals deliver hefty blow

Wednesday’s play-off ambitions were dealt another blow when rivals Reading took all three points in a 2-0 win at Hillsborough.

The defeat means it’s just one victory in six – and four defeats – for the Owls and we will be out of the play-off positions if Fulham win their home game with Wolves on Saturday.

We could point to some outstanding saves by Reading’s Ali Al Habsi, but they came largely in the closing minutes when he foiled Jordan Rhodes, Callum McManaman and Will Buckley.

Prior to the late rally, Wednesday were unlucky to see a Morgan Fox effort strike the woodwork for what would have been a first half equaliser and Al Habsi made a tremendous reflex save to keep out a Rhodes header before the interval.

Wednesday had 21 shots and nine on target but Reading looked the more assured side from the start and bossed much of the first half after taking a 13th minute lead through Yann Kermogant.

We took the game more to them after the break but couldn’t find a way past Al Habsi and they clinched the points almost on full time. Keiren Westwood had joined the attack for a corner but Reading broke clear and Adrian Popa was able to run through to score into the empty net.
