Wednesday well beaten in FA Cup replay

Wednesday bowed out of the FA Cup with hardly a whimper in a comprehensive 3-0 first round replay defeat at Plymouth this evening.

After a promising opening spell, we finished a well-beaten side against the division one leaders and, as the phrase goes, we can now concentrate on the league.

Florian Kamberi forced an early save from home keeper Michael Cooper and he then provided the opportunity for Jaden Brown to fire in a fierce effort which was blocked by defender Dan Scarr.

However, our attacking start was undone on 20 minutes when Plymouth caught us on the break and Jordan Garrick shot home from the edge of the box.

Five minutes later Wednesday were forced to make a substitution, Dennis Adeniran limping off to be replaced by Sylla Sow.

Joe Wildsmith kept out an effort from Conor Grant as the home side took a stranglehold on the game and we were two down on 36 minutes, the dangerous Ryan Hardie showing some neat footwork before shooting home via a post from close range.

Worse followed midway through the second half with a third Plymouth goal when Wildsmith came off his line to gather a through pass but misjudged the situation. The keeper ended up handling outside the box and, when he let the ball go, Garrick pounced to curl the ball into the unguarded net, with Wildsmith also booked.

It was then largely just a question of whether Plymouth would add to their score in the remaining 23 minutes, thankfully they didn’t … particularly for the 1,000-plus Wednesday fans who had made the marathon midweek  journey to Home Park.

Wildsmith, Paterson, Dunkley, Palmer, Adeniran (Sow 25) , Dele-Bashiru, Bannan (Luongo 74), Wing, Brown, Berahino (Corbeanu 59), Kamberi (Shodipo 74). Unused subs: Peacock-Farrell, Byers.
