Owls up to fifth after Fernando’s late show

The performance might have lacked the vibrancy and vitality of our last away win at Forest … but Fernando Forestieri’s late winner at Huddersfield could prove just as important to our promotion ambitions.

Forestieri struck after 83 minutes when substitute Lucas Joao broke clear on the left and sent an excellent teasing ball across the face of the goal for his fellow striker to finish at the far post in front of the near 4,000 Wednesday following.

Huddersfield almost grabbed an equaliser shortly afterwards but Kieran Lee cleared off the line from Philip Billing’s header and Wednesday held firm to take the points from a workmanlike, rather than outstanding, performance.

There were few goal threats from either side in the first-half but Wednesday almost took the lead ten minutes after the restart when Aiden McGeady’s effort was headed off the line by Joel Lynch.

Victory moves us up to fifth place, a point ahead of Derby and four away from fourth-placed Hull. We also remain three points clear of Cardiff in seventh while eighth-placed Ipswich are six points behind and Birmingham and Preston trail us by nine points, Brum having a game in hand.
