Owls to face Royals in FA Cup fourth round

Goals in each half from Marco Matias and Atdhe Nuhiu saw Wednesday ease through to the fourth round of the FA Cup in our replay with Carlisle at a snowy Hillsborough on Tuesday evening.

Victory books us a home tie in the next round on Friday, January 26 against fellow Championship side Reading, who defeated Stevenage 3-0 in their replay.

Matias netted smartly on 28 minutes after being played through by Nuhiu and the former returned the compliment, setting up his strike partner for a clinical finish midway through the second half.

Jos Luhukay gave a debut to young defender Frederik Nielsen while fellow youngster Connor O’Grady joined him at the back, making his first senior appearance at Hillsborough after playing for the first team in the League Cup at Cambridge last season.

Carlisle keeper Jack Bonham distinguished himself with good saves in both halves while Carlisle had their moments, particularly before we opened the scoring, and Cameron Dawson performed well in the home goal.

Wednesday will be happy to have made it two successive games without conceding a goal while Matias’ strike ended a goal drought that stretched back to the 3-0 win at Forest on Boxing Day.

Dawson, Hunt, Nielsen, Venancio, O’Grady, Fox, Boyd, Butterfield, Jones (Reach 79), Nuhiu, Matias. Unused subs: Wildsmith, Palmer, Pudil, Wallace, Joao, Rhodes. Att: 12,003.
