Owls stay out of drop zone after late defeat for Derby

Wednesday stay one place above the relegation places after this afternoon’s Championship games.

With the coronavirus outbreak at S6 forcing the postponement of our away game with Coventry, Derby had the chance to go above us … until fellow strugglers Rotherham struck an 86th minute winner.

That result leaves us in 21st place on 19 points, ahead of both Rotherham and Derby on goal difference, while bottom club Wycombe stay on 15 points after a Covid outbreak at their club saw the scheduled game at QPR also postponed.

Of the teams immediately above Wednesday before today’s kick offs, both Forest and Birmingham had victories, Forest moving six points clear of us – having played a game more – and Brum a further point ahead, again having played one more match than us.

While our scheduled game with Wycombe on Tuesday evening has already been postponed due to Covid, Derby are at home to promotion-chasing Bournemouth on the same night and Rotherham entertain Stoke.

On Wednesday, Forest host Middlesbrough while QPR, who have dropped to 20th on 24 points, are at Cardiff and Birmingham entertain Preston.

Our next Championship game is not until January 30 when Preston come to Hillsborough, by which time Derby, Rotherham and QPR are each scheduled to have played two more league matches.
