Owls out after VAR penalty drama

A tale of two penalty decisions midway through the first half paved the way for Wednesday’s 3-0 FA Cup exit at Chelsea on Sunday evening.

We were awarded a spot kick for a challenge by Ethan Ampadu on Joey Pelupessy – only for VAR to then rule that the defender’s tackle was a fair one.

Before we could recover from this, Chelsea were given a penalty of their own when Sam Hutchinson was adjudged to have fouled Cesar Azpillicueta. This time VAR ruled it was a correct decision and Willian slotted home from the spot.

While the home side totally dominated, Westwood was rarely tested in the first 45.

Wednesday, backed by 6000 vociferous fans, began the second half more promisingly but, although Adam Reach’s cross hit the outside of the post, we just couldn’t get any sustained period of possession.

Chelsea continued to work the ball around the pitch and their second goal came on 65 minutes when Callum Hudson-Odoi turned inside Morgan Fox to fire home.

And the home side wrapped up matters seven minutes from time when Willian slotted his second goal past Westwood.
