One point from play-offs after double strike

Two excellent long-range strikes saw Wednesday chalk up a third successive Championship win and move us to within a point of the play-offs after a 2-1 victory at Reading.

Adam Reach expertly sidefooted us into the lead from the edge of the box after 12 minutes and a similar strike from Lucas Joao, albeit slightly further out, just 20 seconds after half-time proved the decisive moments.

Reading pulled a goal back on 64 minutes when Liam Moore was left unmarked to head home from 12 yards and give hope to the home side.

However, while Reading then had plenty of possession in the closing minutes, Cameron Dawson was only called upon to make one crucial late save when he held on to Mark McNulty’s effort in added time.

Wednesday had begun the game well, culminating in the opener from Reach, but then allowed the home side to dominate for much of the rest of the half and Dawson pulled off a first-class stop just before the break to deny Modou Barrow from close range.

Atdhe Nuhiu might have put the game beyond Reading with the score at 2-0 but his shot was too close to keeper Vito Mannone and then came the Moore header soon afterwards to ensure another nervy finish.

Victory also lifts us to eleventh place – after Bristol City’s win over Blackburn on Sunday – and, although we have only faced Brentford of the top six, it extends our recent improved run into the international break.
