Owls lead twice but lose at Derby

Wednesday made it seven games without a win after twice taking the lead at promotion-chasing Derby before losing 3-2.

Lewis McGugan’s excellent free kick from just outside the penalty area put us ahead on 20 minutes and Will Keane’s powerful angled drive 10 minutes after half time saw the Owls restore the lead after Jake Buxton’s headed equaliser a minute into the second half.

However, we allowed Buxton to head in a second equaliser on 68 minutes – again from a corner – and 12 minutes from time there was a double blow when Keiren Westwood brought down Tom Ince inside the box.

Referee Darren Bond awarded a penalty but also showed Westwood a red card and Darren Bent stepped up to score from the spot, despite substitute keeper Chris Kirkland diving the right way.

We never looked like retrieving the situation after that and this latest setback sees us dropping to 12th place and nine points off the relegation places.
