Wednesday lost further ground on the play-off places when a 96th minute mishit effort from Michael Dawson saw us held to a 2-2 Hillsborough draw with Hull.
We are unbeaten in seven games but, with only two wins in that time, we are now in 12th place and eight points behind sixth-placed Derby.
Wednesday went into this first game of December having had just five shots on target during November and it was more of the same in the opening 45 minutes, as we failed to trouble the Hull goal in another lifeless first-half home performance.
The struggling visitors were hardly any better but did take the lead on 21 minutes, Fraizer Campbell slotting home after poor Wednesday defending.
However, the introduction of substitute Atdhe Nuhiu on 55 minutes turned the game on its head.
The big striker gestured to the Kop within minutes of coming on, encouraging the fans to get behind the team, and his one-man cheer leader act had the desired effect.
Adam Reach was unfortunate to see his effort come back off an upright and then Gary Hooper smashed home an equaliser from close range on 69 minutes – the assistant referee initially raising his flag for offside but, after consultation with ref Mike Jones, the goal was given.
Seven minutes from time there was more controversy when Dawson threw his body to block a shot from Reach. The ball looked as though it struck Dawson’s arm – although TV replays later appeared to show it hit his body – and ref Jones waved away the penalty appeals, which also resulted in a furious Carlos Carvalhal being sent to the stands.
Two minutes later we were in front, Nuhiu headed down Liam Palmer’s cross into the path of Hooper and he fired into the far corner of the net.
Hull had not threatened in the second half but, deep into added time, Wednesday failed to fully clear their lines and when the ball came back into the box, the unmarked Dawson was on hand at the far post to ‘shin’ a shot back across goal and it trickled agonisingly into the net off an upright.
