Owls have to settle for replay after goalless draw

Wednesday face a long midweek trip to Plymouth for a first round replay after a goalless draw at Hillsborough.

Lewis Wing had a great chance to settle a disappointing tie in added time but blazed over the bar from inside the box and so we have to meet again in the West Country on November 16.

After a sluggish first-half display, Wednesday gave an improved performance in the second 45, Liam Palmer shooting straight at keeper Michael Cooper from 12 yards when he should have done better and Cooper pushing away an angled Saido Berahino drive for a corner soon afterwards.

There were also appeals for a penalty turned away in the last minute of normal time when Mide Shodipo went down under a joint challenge from Cooper and defender Dan Scarr.

Then came Wing’s late chance to clinch a second round place for Wednesday but he elected to let the ball bounce rather than try a first-time volley and his effort went high over the bar and into the Kop.

At the other end, Bailey Peacock-Farrell had to produce an excellent save from Jordon Garrick’s close-range effort on 75 minutes, Wing completing the clearance off the line.

The visitors probably edged the first half and went close after just five minutes when Panutche Camara won a tackle in his own half, burst clear and played a one-two before seeing his effort saved by Peacock-Farrell.

Berahino missed a good chance with a miscued header but was ruled offside and the only time we tested Cooper in the first period was an angled effort from Dennis Adeniran which was comfortably saved.

Peacock-Farrell, Palmer, Dunkley, Johnson, Paterson (Hunt 59), Bannan, Wing, Adeniran (Dele-Bashiru 59), Corbeanu (Shodipo 76), Berahino (Sow 86), Kamberi (Gregory 59). Unused subs. Wildsmith, Brown, Luongo, Byers.
