Owls go out despite late fightback

Wednesday’s hopes of a good run in the Carabao Cup ended in a 3-2 second round defeat at Bolton … despite two late goals from Jordan Rhodes.

The home side looked to be easing through to the third round with three goals in a 22-minute spell, before a Rhodes-inspired fightback.

Dorian Devite fired Bolton ahead three minutes from half-time, then an Adam Armstrong penalty on 57 minutes – after Joe Wildsmith had fouled ex-Owl loanee Will Buckley – made it two and a Jem Karacan header seven minutes later seemed to have secured a comfortable win for Wanderers against a lacklustre Wednesday team.

However, Rhodes pulled a goal back 14 minutes from time with a close-range finish, and subs Atdhe Nuhiu and Marco Matias then both missed good chances to add a second before Rhodes showed the way with an 83rd minute header.

Nuhiu saw an injury-time header saved and the comeback proved too little, too late.
