Owls go down to two-goal Toney

Wednesday’s hopes of further reducing our minus points deficit were denied in a 2-1 home defeat to Brentford this evening.

Leading scorer Ivan Toney netted a first-half double for the Bees and, although Callum Paterson scored his first goal for Wednesday, the visitors looked the all-round sharper team.

Toney opened the scoring on seven minutes. slotting the ball home after Cameron Dawson had pushed out a fierce drive from Henrik Dalsgaard.

Our first clear opening came on 21 minutes when Adam Reach’s angled drive was kept out by David Raya and we were level four minutes later, Paterson opening his Wednesday account with a fine diving header from Kadeem Harris’ excellent cross.

However Brentford, and particularly Toney, caused problems on several occasions in the first period and it was the same player on the spot again on the half-hour, heading them back in front from a corner.

Dawson then saved from Mathias Jensen just before half time and saw a fierce effort from Dalsgaard fly inches over the top.

We had more possession for the opening 15 minutes of the second half but our only real threat came on the hour when Paterson’s header was saved by Raya … and he was flagged offside anyway.

Brentford were far less threatening after the break, Toney missing the chance of a hat-trick when he miscued from close range, but we rarely looked like getting an equaliser at the other end.

Dawson, Odubajo, Flint, Van Aken, Harris, Bannan, Hunt (Pelupessy 45), Reach, Marriott (Rhodes 72), Windass (Dele-Bashiru 51), Paterson. Unused subs. Wildsmith, Palmer, Borner, Kachunga.
