Owls ease their way to warm-up victory

A second-minute goal from Jordan Rhodes put Wednesday on the way to a 3-1 friendly win at Lincoln on Saturday.

Rhodes headed home the opener and Adam Reach made it two with a smart finish before half-time, Lincoln’s Neal Eardley then turning the ball into his own net after the break to complete the scoring for the Owls.

Steve Bruce, linked all week with a possible move to Newcastle, took charge of the side. There were chants of ‘Steve Bruce’s Barmy Army’ from some of the 3,000 Wednesday fans but one supporter was led away by stewards early in the match after confronting Bruce in his dugout.

We also hit the woodwork three times in the first half, including a cracking long-ranger from Lucas Joao which rattled the crossbar.

Lincoln pulled a goal back late on through Jordan Adebayo-Smith but Wednesday held out comfortably for the 3-1 win.

Joe Wildsmith replaced Westwood at half time, with substitutions during the second period seeing triallist Josh McEachran on for Steven Fletcher, Matt Penney for Joao, Jack Stobbs for Moses Odubajo, Preslav Borukov replacing Jordan Rhodes and Fraser Preston, Alex Hunt and Connor Kirby being introduced in the closing minutes for Barry Bannan, Reach and Liam Palmer.

Westwood, Palmer, Borner, Lees, Odubajo, Reach, Pelupessy, Bannan, Fletcher, Joao, Rhodes. Subs. Wildsmith, Penney, McEachran, Borukov, Stobbs, Preston, Hunt, Hughes, Kirby.
