Owls denied win by late equaliser

A late Espanyol equaliser denied Wednesday victory in a 2-2 draw with the La Liga side at Hillsborough on Sunday.

We were leading for the second time in the friendly when Fernando Forestieri converted a 79th minute penalty following a foul by Bernardo Zuniga on Jordan Rhodes but, four minutes from time, Wu Lie took full advantage of miscontrol by Moses Odubajo and fired high into the net from the edge of the box.

Steven Fletcher had put us ahead on 24 minutes with an excellent far post header from a driven Barry Bannan cross, only for Espanyol to level five minutes later when Javier Diaz sent a cracking 20-yarder into the top corner of Keiren Westwood’s goal.

Lee Bullen made several changes during the second half and we looked to have done enough to chalk up another pre-season win in our final warm-up match before that second quality strike from the visitors.

Westwood, Palmer (Fox 72), Lees (van Aken 81), Borner (Iorfa 46), Odubajo, Reach (Winnall 63), Bannan (Forestieri 63), Lee (Nuhiu 72), Hutchinson (Pelupessy 63), Joao (Harris 46), Fletcher (Rhodes 56). Unused sub: Dawson.
