Owls complete warm-up with defeat

Wednesday’s final warm-up game ended in a 3-1 defeat to Villareal at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The 10,600 crowd were treated to the rarity of a Liam Palmer goal, the full back breaking into the penalty box and coolly slotting the ball into the far corner of the net to equalise for the Owls on 33 minutes.

The visitors had taken the lead on 18 minutes through a Gerard Moreno header and were back in front soon after the interval when Funes Mori took advantage of some static defending to easily nod home.

The Spanish side then completed the scoring 20 minutes from time when Karl Toko Ekambi played a one-two and clipped the ball over Cameron Dawson.

Both sides made several subsititutions during the second half and one of those – Steven Fletcher – twice went close for Wednesday late on, his second effort hitting the outside of the post.

However, we could have no complaints about the result with the La Liga outfit’s ‘pass and move’ game often proving too sharp and too slick for the Owls.

Wildsmith (Dawson 46), Palmer (56), Lees (Thorniley 61), van Aken (Nielsen 71), Pudil, Bannan (Fox 61), Pelupessy (Jones 61), Hutchinson (Matias 46), Boyd (Reach 61), Forestieri (Joao 46), Nuhiu (Fletcher 61).
