Owls boss to decide on ‘derby day’ defence

Steve Bruce has to decide on who will fill the left back slot ahead of Monday evening’s derby showdown with Sheff U at Hillsborough.

Achraf Lazaar is ruled out with the hamstring injury he picked up in the win over Brentford and is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.

Morgan Fox may well be fit to return as replacement for Lazaar after his back problem but Bruce could decide to switch Liam Palmer to left back, with Dominic Iorfa taking Palmer’s usual right back slot … a move that worked in the Brentford game after Lazaar limped off.

The full back decision aside, Bruce is unlikely to make any other changes from the Brentford starting line-up. We also wait to see if Lucas Joao is ready to return to the squad following the knee injury that ruled him out of the Bees match and, similarly, Jordan Thorniley could be in the 18 after suffering concussion at Rotherham last month.

Championship results from the weekend saw us drop from 12th to 14th place but victory over Sheff U would lift us to within four points of the play-offs.
