Owls back in play-offs after Fletcher double

Two first-half goals from Steven Fletcher fired Wednesday back into the play-offs at Rotherham on Tuesday night.

With Fulham going down 4-2 at Derby, the brace from Fletcher – a close-range effort that appeared to be offside and an excellent header – secured the three points and returned us to sixth place and two points clear of Fulham.

It was a far from top-notch performance from the Owls against poor opposition but the result was all-important and, in addition, while Fulham’s goal difference is still seven goals better than ours, we also gained four goals on them in one evening.

With Leeds losing at Brentford, we are now just three points behind Gary Monk’s side in fifth place and trail fourth-placed Huddersfield by five points, although they have a game in hand … at home to Norwich on Wednesday evening.

Below Wednesday and then Fulham, Preston are five points adrift of us, with Derby seven points behind and Norwich and Villa trailing by a further two points – Norwich having that game in hand at Huddersfield.
