Monk pleased as Massimo hits winner

Garry Monk was pleased with Wednesday’s 1-0 home win over Wigan, which took us to within a point of the play-offs and just three behind leaders West Brom.

Massimo Luongo scored the only goal of the game, his first for the club, when he fired high into the net from just inside the penalty area on 57 minutes.

Monk said afterwards: “We spoke to the players at half time about picking up the tempo and there’s a big difference between pace and tempo.

”There is pace in the team but in the second half we moved the ball quicker and we got the reward.

”Massimo took his goal really well and I was pleased with him and Joey in the middle. I thought they played really well.”

Barry Bannan went close to putting us ahead late in the first half when his long ranger hit the woodwork and Steven Fletcher had an effort disallowed late on.

At the other end, Keiren Westwood produced an excellent save to tip Keiffer Moore’s header onto the bar on 70 minutes but Wednesday held firm to take our points tally to 19 and 10 points from Monk’s first five gsmes in charge.
