Milan: Yes, Warnock is on shortlist, but …

Milan Mandaric this aternoon confirmed that Neil Warnock is on a shortlist of five people for the Wednesday manager’s job.

However, Mandaric made it clear that Warnock was only one of a handful of contenders for the position and that interviewing will continue in the coming days.

Asked how we would respond to cricitism from many supporters if he appointed Sheff U fan Warnock to the job, Mandaric said: “I would explain to the fans that it was for no other reason than it was the best decision for the club.

“We need someone with the capability to galvanise the club and take us to where we should be. ”

He said that caretaker boss Stuart Gray was not on the shortlist for the job but was full of praise for the caretaker role he was doing and said that this was helping him in taking his time over making a decision on the full-time position.

Mandaric confirmed that Rotherham’s Steve Evans was not on the shortlist, the Millers having refused permission for Wednesday to speak to him about the position.

The chairman added that he wanted to take his time over the appointment as he needed someone who can not only keep us the Championship but also move the club forward.

And it now looks likely that Gray will take charge again on Saturday with an appointment waiting until next week.
