Megson’s disappointment as two more points go begging

Gary Megson rued missed chances as Wednesday lost more ground in the promotion chase after suffering another late sucker punch at Hillsborough on Saturday.

A classic Jermaine Johnson solo run and shot and a 12-yard drive from Gary Madine put us in control with 15 minutes remaining against Hartlepool, after the visitors had taken the lead within two minues of half-time through a Peter Hartley header.

However, with just three minutes remaining, Antony Sweeney’s speculative 20-yard volley looped over Nicky Weaver in the swirling wind to earn Pools an unlikely point and further dent our hopes of automatic promotion.

Megson said: “We had 11 chances – not just chances but good chances. But we’ve only scored two goals yet Hartlepool had two chances of their own and scored them both.”

New boy Mike Jones had an early effort saved by Scott Flinders and Madine was narrowly off target before the break.

After the interval, substitute Ryan Lowe saw Flinders block his close-range effort and went close again when he fired wide, while Danny Batth and Miguel Llera both headed over when well placed.
