Manager’s verdict: It’s something to build on

Darren Moore is looking for his new-look Wednesday squad to build on the point gained in our league opener at Charlton this evening.

Speaking after a goalless draw of few chances at the Valley, Moore said: “It’s going to take time but what we need to be showing is improvement week after week.

“There were lots of positives in the performance today.”

He added: “It’s a solid start and something to build on. Defensively we were sound, we were solid.

“We had some chances, not too many but some, and you only need one to go in to win a game. Baz nearly got it at the end, it was a great run and he was unlucky.”

Talking about the early head injury to Callum Paterson, which saw the striker stretchered off after eight minutes of on-field treatment, the manager said: “He’s up and about in the dressing room, he was knocked out temporarily but he’s with the boys and we’ll monitor him over the next 24 hours.

“He has been checked out and  he will go through the protocol measures in the next few days.”

Paying tribute to Wednesday’s 3,000-plus following, Moore said: “I thought our fans were magnificent and I want to say a big thank you to them for the noise they made and the chanting throughout.

“Let’s not forget this game was live on Sky, it was in London, it was a tea- time kick-off so thank you to the 3,000 or so who made the trip down from Sheffield.”
