Loovens is back for Birmingham challenge

Glenn Loovens is set to return to the heart of the Wednesday defence for tomorrow night’s trip to Birmingham.

The skipper missed Saturday’s goalless draw at Bolton as he was serving a one-match ban but Stuart Gray is ready to bring him straight back into the side to partner Tom Lees, with Kamil Zayatte reverting to the bench.

Kieran Lee and Sam Hutchinson are still sidelined through injury while Everton loanee Hallam Hope is unlikely to be risked after suffering a slight hamstring problem in the build-up to last Saturday’s match.

Gray called on Wednesday to show a calmness in their shooting and to be more ruthless in front of goal after totally dominating at Bolton and said he had let the midfield and strikers know how he felt about the finishing after a performance that saw the Owls have 24 attempts on goal – but only four on target.

With Hutchinson and Lee injured, his options to change things around are limited but he could be tempted to give loanee Royston Drenthe a place in the starting line-up.
