Lita ensures Wednesday are heading in right direction

Leroy Lita

Leroy Lita’s goal nine minutes from time saw Wednesday stretch the unbeaten league run to seven games and was enough to see off promotion-chasing Crystal Palace at Hillsborough today.

Lita converted Michail Antonio’s right-wing cross with a header off the underside of the bar to seal all three points in front of the Kop – and Lita might have had another minutes later when he burst clear, only for Palace keeper Julian Speroni to foil his efort with an outstretched foot.

Wednesday held their own in a scrappy encounter against a Palace side who hardly looked like promotion candidates.

Palace stepped up the pace at the start of the second-half but Chris Kirkland blocked an effort from Scott Dobbie and produced an even better stop to deny Yannick Bolasie at full stretch.

Then, just as the game looked to be heading for a goalless stalemate, Lita struck with his late header, taking Wednesday up to 18th place and on 40 points.
