‘Lack of focus and concentration cost us’

Garry Monk talked of a lack of concentration and focus after seeing Wednesday concede three goals in the closing 20 minutes against Preston.

Following the 3-1 defeat, he said: “The main factor, from the end of that game, is we have to be much, much better at the fundamentals. It’s about that focus and concentration at the critical moment. You expect to have that at this level.”

Reflecting on the disallowed Julian Borner goal which would have put us 2-1 up in the 86th minute, he said: “It was hugely disappointing that moment went against us with the goal but then those last ten minutes, the individual battles, the concentration, it has cost us.

“We felt robbed in terms of the goal disallowed but we can’t control that. What we can control is our focus and that is what has cost us in that little bit.

“Basic errors in terms of fundamentals are proving very costly.”

With a backdrop of just three wins in the last 19 games, the Owls boss added: “I understand you live and die by results, it needs a lot of work but I’m determined. The demand is always there at big clubs and I’m determined to get it right.

“It is my responsibility. It is going to take a lot of work to get parts of the game right.”

Monk said that Kieran Lee and Connor Wickham missed out against Preston due to fatigue but he hopes they will be fit for consideration at QPR on Saturday.
