Jones: Derby display could have been down to virus

Dave Jones says the club is looking at the possibility that a virus at the St George’s Park national football headquarters could have been a factor behind last weekend’s shocking display at Derby.

Wednesday trained at the centre in the build-up to the Pride Park defeat, before it was reported at the weekend that a small number of people staying at the nearby hotel had been affected by a stomach virus, also forcing the England senior and under-21 squads to relocate their ‘homes’ in preparation for international games this week.

Jones, who explained that the club has been looking at all possible reasons for the Derby performance, said:  “We’re not saying that’s what it was but it is something we are looking at.”

He added that one or two of the Wednesday squad have been ill this week and that if it is found that there is a virus in the Owls camp then “we will need to ensure we clean the place and everything that goes with it”.
