Joao’s a wow as Owls eye play-off places

Lucas Joao added to his growing reputation with two goals that saw Wednesday move to within a point of the play-off places in a 3-1 home win over Huddersfield today.

The young Portuguese striker came on at half-time after an opening 45 minutes from the Owls that was a million miles away from our free-flowing and passing football of much of the season to date.

Joao soon began to pose the visitors problems with his strong running and trickery but it was Huddersfield who took the lead on 54 minutes when Sean Scannell lost his marker and headed home at the far post.

And, despite an improved second-half display from Wednesday, a point – let alone three – looked a long way off with less than 15 minutes remaining.

However, the introduction of Gary Hooper gave added power up front and the loanee had two chances within a matter of minutes before Joao grabbed the equaliser, slotting home on 78 minutes from inside the box after Fernando Forestieri’s shot was cleared off the line.

And, five minutes later we were in front, Forestieri seeing his shot come back off keeper Joe Murphy and having the presence of mind to pull the rebound back for Kieran Lee to net from close range.

Then came the icing on the cake in injury time with Forestieri again the architect as he set Joao clear on the left, the youngster cutting inside before curling a cracking effort beyond Murphy and into the far corner of the net to seal the points.
