It’s Weaver versus O’Donnell for goalkeeping spot at Walsall

Gary Megson needs to decide between Richard O’Donnell and Nicky Weaver for the goalkeeping spot when Wednesday travel to Walsall on Boxing Day.

With Stephen Bywater having returned to Derby after his loan spell, it’s a straight choice of O’Donnell or Weaver for the trip to face the Saddlers. Long-term injury victim Weaver came through a behind closed doors midweek friendly match with Leeds while O’Donnell deputised for Weaver earlier in the season and replaced Bywater in the FA Cup ties against Morecambe and Aldershot.

Megson says he has already decided who will start between the posts and it seems doubtful he will take a gamble on Weaver after his lengthy spell out of action.

Bywater’s departure also clears the way for Megson to bring Blackpool defender and loanee Miguel Liera back into the squad. Liera was left out recently as the Owls had used up the permitted five loan players in any one matchday squad.

Up front, Megson has another selection poser with Ryan Lowe and Sanchez Watt vying to play alongside Chris O’Grady. Lowe has come on from the bench at half-time in the previous two games and arguably done enough to earn a place in the starting line-up ahead of Arsenal loanee Watt.

Wednesday will be backed by another 4,000-strong away support, with Walsall allocating one end and one side of the ground to our fans.

* Who do you think should play at Walsall on Boxing Day … Weaver or O’Donnell in goal … Lowe or Watt up front?
