Hutch could be back for second leg decider

Sam Hutchinson could return to the Wednesday midfield for Wednesday evening’s play-off semi-final second leg against Huddersfield at a sold out Hillsborough.

Hutchinson missed out in the goalless first leg at the John Smith’s Stadium after suffering a knee injury in training but Carlos Carvalhal has indicated the player could be fit to return for the S6 showdown.

The Terriers dominated possession on Sunday and the Wednesday midfield, lacking a more defensive player, struggled to match the home side in this area. If Hutchinson is to return, then either Adam Reach or Ross Wallace could drop to the bench.

Up front, the introduction of Jordan Rhodes and Sam Winnall during the second period on Sunday gave us a fresh attacking impetus and we wait to see if Carvalhal gives one or both of them a starting place or sticks with the strike pair of Fernando Forestieri and Steven Fletcher, who began the first leg.

Gary Hooper is again rated as doubtful with his hamstring problem.

Away goals do not count as double in the play-offs and, if necessary, there will be extra time and even the agony of a penalty shootout to decide who goes through to face Reading in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on May 29.
