Green hits late winner in Alfreton pre-season friendly

A late goal from Andre Green gave Wednesday a 1-0 win in our third pre-season friendly at National League North side Alfreton this evening.

Green struck on 83 minutes, slotting the ball low past keeper Alfie Smith-Eccles and into the corner of the net.

We had almost fallen behind after just two minutes, Alex Hunt clearing off the line from Tom Allan’s low strike but soon began to take charge and new signing Olamide Shodipo shot just wide when set up by Barry Bannan.

Josh Windass saw his effort blocked and Charles Hagan had a low shot saved by keeper George Willis, while Alfreton caused one or two scares at the other end.

As in previous friendlies, Wednesday made wholesale changes at half time, Hagan the only player from the first period to retain his place after sub Fisayo Dele-Bashiru picked up a knock in the half-time warm-up.

We were close to taking the lead on 64 minutes, Green bringing a save out of Smith-Eccles after an excellent through ball from Massimo Luongo, and when the ball rebounded back to Dennis Adeniran his cracking effort from the edge of the box clipped the bar.

Not surprisingly, the Owls looked much the stronger side as the game wore on and we hit the woodwork for the second time through a triallist before Green struck with that late winner.

Wildsmith, Brennan, Hutchinson, Borner, Dawodu, Bannan, Hunt, Triallist,  Hagan, Shodipo, Windass. Subs. Dawson, Palmer, Dunkley, Triallist, Galvin, Luongo, Adeniran, Waldock, Dele-Bashiru, Green, Paterson.
