Gray ‘hopes to be new boss’ before Rochdale tie

Stuart Gray says he hopes to be named as the new Wednesday manager before the FA Cup tie at Rochdale on Saturday.

He told BBC Radio Sheffield: “We’re very close and I’m meeting the chairman later. Hopefully it’ll be announced before Saturday.”

Caretaker boss Gray said he had wondered what he needed to do to get the permanent job after he failed to seal the position followng the 6-0 win over Leeds – but he added that this was “the chairman’s prerogative”.

Gray, who also described Wednesday as a “fantastic football club”, has steered us to four wins and three draws from his nine Championship games in charge since taking over as caretaker from Dave Jones at the start of December,

The upturn in form has lifted the Owls out of the relegation places and several of the first-team squad have spoken publicly in support of Gray getting the job.
