Four-goal Owls edge closer to play-offs

Wednesday go into the international break just two points of the play-offs after a 4-2 win over Blackburn at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Despite the four goals, it was a patchy performance at times but an eleventh game without defeat means we will face a tough sequence of matches after the break still with that outside chance of a play-off position.

The in-form Steven Fletcher struck shot us in front from close range after just 10 minutes, steering home Dominic Iotfa’s inviting low cross.

And a confident-looking Wednesday could have had more goals in the opening spell, Sam Winnall and Adam Reach going close to turning home a cross from Rolando Aarons and Michael Hector seeing his header strike a post.

However, Blackburn recovered from the shaky start to gain more possession and Keiren Westwood had to go full length to keep out an effort from Bradley Dack.

The visitors again looked threatening from the restart but we doubled our lead on the hour when sub Atdhe Nuhiu headed home.

Craig Conway took advantage of slack defending to make it 2-1 12 minutes later, only for Iorfa to seize on a loose ball in the box to smash home our third goal on 79 minutes.

Soon afterwards, Marco Matias slotted home to make it 4-1, with the keeper looking at fault, before a lack of concentration at the back allowed Elliott Bennett to get a second goal for Rovers almost immediately.

That was the end of the scoring after a lively afternoon at S6 and the win sees us in 10th place on 55 points, just two behind sixth-placed Villa.
