Four-goal Owls edge close to play-offs

A first-half goal spree saw Wednesday move up to seventh place and just a point from the play-offs after a 4-1 win at Middlesbrough today.

We rocked Boro with two goals in the opening six minutes, Adam Clayton turning the ball into his own net and then Dominic Iorfa heading home from Barry Bannan’s cross.

The home side got back into the game through Paddy McNair on 19 minutes but Adam Reach restored our two-goal advantage four minutes later – his first away goal since scoring at the Riverside on Boxing Day and, of course, against his former club.

Then, to complete an excellent first-half display from Wednesday, Steven Fletcher headed us into a 4-1 lead on 33 minutes, converting from a Reach cross.

Britt Assombalonga missed two excellent chances to reduce the arrears for Boro early in the second half and they proved costly as Keiren Westwood was rarely troubled after that.

At the other end, Wednesday failed to repeat our first-half display or add to the goals tally but both Moses Odubajo and Sam Winnall forced saves out of Darren Randolph.

The three points takes us up to seventh position on 16 points, just one from the play-offs and three behind new leaders, West Brom.

Westwood; Odubajo, Iorfa, Borner, Palmer; Reach, Hutchinson (Luongo 41), Bannan, Harris (Fox 89); Nuhiu (Winnall 80), Fletcher. Unused subs: Dawson, Pelupessy, Lee, Murphy.
