First-half double ends Carabao Cup run

Wednesday’s Carabao Cup run ended in a 2-0 third round defeat at Fulham this evening.

Garry Monk fielded 10 of the starting line-up that won our second round tie at Rochdale last week – a combination of youngsters and experience – but two first-half goals from Fulham proved decisive.

It took the home side just nine minutes to go in front, Aboubakar Kamara turning the ball home from close range, before Wednesday hit back with a tester from Adam Reach saved by Marek Rodak and then Fishayo Dele-Bashiru shooting straight at Rodak when well placed.

Joe Wildsmith denied Antonee Robinson with a good save at the other end on the half-hour mark but the home side did double their lead three minutes later when Bobby Decordova-Reid netted at the back post.

Moses Odubajo tested Rodak shortly before half time and then saw another effort saved by the keeper soon after the restart.

However, Fulham came on strong in the closing quarter, Wildsmith denying Decordova-Reid and then Anthony Knockaert shooting wide when he should have done better as our hopes of progressing further in the competition disappeared on a wet evening in south-west London.

Wildsmith, Palmer (Penney 71), Brennan, Shaw, Borner, Odubajo, Pelupessy, Dele-Bashiru, Waldock (Rhodes 79), Reach, Kachunga (Hagan 82). Unused subs. Dawson, Iorfa.
