“Fantastic performance” says Carlos

Carlos Carvalhal was delighted with the way Wednesday shrugged off Saturday’s reverse at Preston with a much-improved display against Chesterfield.

After the 4-1 Carabao Cup win, Carvalhal said: “We did a fantastic performance.

“We moved the ball well and had three or four chances in the first 15 to 20 minutes.

“Then we conceded a goal but we didn’t lose our heads. We still played our football, moved the ball and found the open spaces.”

He added: “We found the correct answer after the last game – not just the score but with the performance as well.”

The head coach also praised the fans who defied the rain to create a “great atmosphere” in the ground and had words for the contribution of Almen Abdi and subs Sam Winnall and Marco Matias.

On Abdi, Carvalhal said Wednesday haven’t yet seen the qualities of the player he bought to the club last season but that he believes he is a completely different proposition this season.

He said: “Almen is more focussed, more angry, he is training better and more inside the team.”

Carvalhal added that Jack Hunt and Joe Wildsmith should be ok for the squad for Saturday’s home game with QPR after both left the field with knocks.
