Double boost for Wildsmith

Joe Wildsmith had a double dose of good news today … within hours of having to leave the field with an injury against Chesterfield.

First there was the confirmation from the keeper himself that his late substitution in the Carabao Cup win, after a clash with ex-Owl Chris O’Grady, was purely a precautionary measure.

Then came the news that the 21-year-old has agreed a new five-year contract with the Owls, securing his future at the club until 2022.

Wildsmith, who has played 18 first team games for the Owls as understudy to Keiren Westwood, should be fit to join the squad for Saturday’s home league game with QPR and said of the injury: “I’m feeling ok today, the doctor didn’t want to take any risks so it was just a precaution.”

Talking about his new deal, he added: “I’m delighted to sign for the club long term, it’s great that the club believe in me and see me as part of the future.”
