Derby win lifts Owls back into play-offs

Wednesday moved back up to sixth place and into the play-offs with a two-goal win over ten-man Barnsley in front of a 27,000-plus crowd at Hillsborough tonight.

We took the lead on 37 minutes when Lucas Joao’s nod down was deflected into his own net by Barnsley defender Angus MacDonald and sealed the points 10 minutes from time when Sam Hutchinson’s shot from inside the box deflected past ex-Owl Adam Davies in the Barnsley goal.

Barnsley were reduced to 10 men three minutes later when Adam Hammill was sent off following a challenge with Hutchinson ,,, although referee Peter Bankes looked to have initially shown the red card to the Wednesday man.

It wasn’t the most convincing performance from the Owls, particularly in the first half, but with most of the teams around us also winning it proved to be a very important three points in our promotion challenge.
