Dele-Bashiru’s late strike seals win for Owls

A fierce close-range finish by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru 10 minutes from time saw Wednesday complete our pre-season friendlies with a 2-1 win at Port Vale this evening.

Korede Adedoyin’s backheel created the opening and Dele-Bashiru pounced to seal victory before Sunday’s Carabao Cup tie with Huddersfield at Hillsborough.

New keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell was called into early action at Vale Park to save from Tom Conlon while Adedoyin tested Lucas Covolan at the other end.

We took the lead on 25 minutes, Dominic Iorfa heading in from debutant Lewis Wing’s corner but the home side were level six minutes later when Conlon finished from close range.

However, we looked the more dangerous side towards the end of the half with Olamide Shodipo twice going close, his header being tipped over the bar and then forcing Covolan to push his shot away for a corner.

There were few chances for either side in the second half before Dele-Bashiru fired home the late winner and then Covolan produced an excellent stop to prevent Ciaran Brennan’s header making it 3-1.
