Defeat means Wednesday could lose second place to rivals

Wednesday could find themselves out of the top two by Tuesday evening . . . if Sheffield United beat Notts County.

After losing to two injury time goals at Walsall on Boxing Day, United have the chance to go a point ahead of us with victory against County.

Gary Megson said after the disappointment of Walsall: “We’d got the game won going into injury time, it’s a fluke the first goal, but after that you make sure you get something from the game.

“For their second goal, it was a simple ball thrown in from wide, I would expect us to head it and if not I would certainly expect us to get the second ball – but we’ve switched off .”

Referring to the manner of this defeat and losing a 4-2 lead to Huddersfield before Christmas, Megson added: “That’s five points lost when we should have had all six.”

Megson was also critical of his strike force for not holding up the ball well enough and pointed to two other second-half chances for goalscorer Ryan Lowe and Chris O’Grady that should have been put away.
